The Truffles story began in 1982 when Peter Tompsett decided to make his passion and love of baking into a career so he bought a small family bakery in Henfield High Street which was called the Regency Bakery which, three years later was to be renamed Truffles Bakery.
Having trained in London at the National Bakery School and then in Germany, Peter was keen to introduce a bit of continental flair to British baking and was determined to make as much as possible by hand from scratch every day (a practice that we are proud to be committed to for over 33 years).
The success of his first shop in Henfield led to further premises in Steyning, Hurstpierpoint and Hove and the relocation of the original bakery behind Henfield to a larger unit on the Mackley Industrial Estate in Small Dole.
Whether you fancy a hearty breakfast, a freshly made sandwich or pie for lunch or wish to indulge in afternoon tea and cake, we feel sure we can accommodate you in one of our eight cafés. Using the freshest ingredients, we prepare our food in house and all our breads and cakes are made every day in our own bakery.
Many of the original bakery team are still working alongside Peter including Peter’s wife Jane, who happened to be his first ever shop employee and three of their four children. A further 190 dedicated people make up the Truffles team working together to ensure the smooth running of our twelve shops, bakery, mobile catering vans and our restaurant at Shoreham Airport- The Hummingbird.
Despite our continued growth we still believe that we have remained true to our philosophy that we are a good, honest and hard working family bakery.
